Space Planning service image

Designed as one living whole.

Garden Design is for a property ready to be considered from first idea through construction and early growth.

The studio brings together spatial planning, materials, planting and technical detail, then stays involved with builders and consultants as the garden is made. A clear direction early in the process keeps later decisions working toward the same result.

Floor Plans for Space Planning
Family Life
Family Life

The experience of the home can continue outside rather than stopping at the door. Practical requirements can become part of the design rather than things that need hiding later.

Personal Retreat
Personal Retreat

A personal garden that supports you to live outdoors rather than sit apart from it. Easy to live with, never generic and low maintenance.

Adaptability
Adaptability
Evolve and Adapt

The garden evolves from an unused space to a private family garden that supports growth and development, wellbeing and daily living.

Environmental Care
Environmental Care

With a deep respect for the land and its environment and resources it provides us, we design a garden that grows with it than against it.

How it works

[

Uncertainty becomes direction. Direction becomes design. Design becomes a garden you retreat into.

Stage 01

Listen and observe

The experience of the home can continue outside rather than stopping at the door. Practical requirements can become part of the design rather than things that need hiding later.

Stage 02

Read the land

Levels, water, sun, wind, views, soil and existing vegetation, understood before they become expensive surprises.

Stage 03

Establish the North Star

From many competing ideas to one agreed direction, the filter for every decision that follows.

Stage 04

Design in detail

The agreed concept translated into clear information a landscaper can price and build from, with the planting resolved in full.

Stage 05

Stay with it

The original design thinking stays present as the garden becomes real, and after it is planted.

01 Consultation & Concept
01 Consultation & Concept

We uncover how you want to live outside, what is not working now, and what matters most, then translate that into a clear direction for the garden.

02 Considered Design
02 Considered Design

Planting, materials and spaces are selected for how they perform, age and fit your investment, so the design works in real life as well as on paper.

03 Before-We-Build Preview
03 Before-We-Build Preview

Plans, material studies and visualisations help you see the key spaces, proportions and atmosphere clearly, so major decisions are made with confidence.

04 Builder Ready Documentation
04 Builder Ready Documentation

We translate the garden into clear construction documentation so it can be priced properly, built accurately and with fewer expensive surprises on site.

05 Integrated Delivery
05 Integrated Delivery

We stay involved with the builder and consultants, review key decisions and resolve design questions as they arise, so the original idea does not get diluted during construction.

06 Garden Establishment
06 Garden Establishment

We stay connected as the garden establishes, helping guide planting, care and design-related issues so the garden has the best chance to mature into what was originally intended.

You do not need to have the whole garden figured out.
You only need to know that it deserves more thought than it is getting now.

Before we Begin.

01
We have so many ideas, and they keep changing. How do we settle on one?

That is where most of our clients begin. The first stage brings every idea together into a single landscape framework, and once that direction is agreed it becomes the filter for every decision that follows. New ideas are still welcome; they simply find their place within the whole rather than pulling the garden in a new direction.

02
Can we build parts of the garden ourselves?

Absolutely. The construction drawings and planting plan are detailed enough for a contractor to price and build from, or for a capable homeowner to take on parts of the work with confidence, knowing what is built will make sense as a whole. Every plant is still set out on site by the studio before it goes into the ground.

03
How do we know it will be built the way it was designed?

The design does not end when the drawings are handed over. We remain available to contractors throughout the works, set out the planting on site and oversee it as it goes in, so the original thinking stays present as the garden becomes real. Follow-up guidance continues as the garden establishes over the following year.

04
Why should we work with a landscape architect?

Most of the cost in a garden is spent in the ground, and decisions made in the wrong order are the most expensive to undo. A path relaid, a tree removed, a pool in the wrong place. The design fee is what ensures that investment is spent once, in the right order, with every element working toward the same result.

05
Can you look at a pool as part of the session?

Yes, where these elements influence the broader landscape direction. We can help identify how they should relate to the garden, what should be resolved early, and where specialist consultant input may be required.

06
Our landscaper has offered to design it for free. What is the difference?

Many landscapers build beautifully, though design included in a construction quote is usually shaped around what they install. An independent design considers the whole property first: the levels, views, planting and how each space will be used. It is then documented so any contractor can price it, which means quotes can finally be compared on equal terms.

07
We have already spent a lot on the house. How do we keep the garden within the investment?

Investment is discussed openly from the very first conversation, so the design is shaped around a realistic investment rather than trimmed back later. Works can also be staged, with a clear plan for what is built now and what can wait, so nothing done first needs to be redone when the next stage arrives.

02
Can we build parts of the garden ourselves?

We work on high-end residential gardens, including new builds, complete garden transformations, planting-led projects and architect-designed homes. For clients who are still in the early stages, the Garden Direction Half-Day is a good place to begin before committing to a full commission.

03
How much should I expect to invest in my garden?

Professional design fees for the full Garden Commission differs for each project. Landscape construction investments typically begin from approximately $60,000 and increasing depending on the size, complexity, access, retaining, pools and material selections. For clients who are not ready for a full commission, the Garden Direction Half-Day is $1,850.
