Project 3

Lyndhurst Health Centre is a new civic facility that brings together natural materials and sustainable construction to deliver a robust, low-carbon building with a strong sense of permanence. A restrained palette of stone and timber is deployed innovatively to demonstrate how thoughtful, distinctive architecture can be achieved economically, without compromising environmental responsibility.

Commissioned in 2020 in response to emerging public health needs, the project replaces an existing, outdated facility with a purpose-built health centre that places equal emphasis on physical care and mental wellbeing. The brief called for a building that would feel approachable and discreet — a calm, reassuring environment that supports users in their day-to-day engagement with health services.

The centre accommodates a range of clinical and support spaces, including counselling rooms, treatment and consultation rooms, isolation suites, and short-stay accommodation. A generous reception area and shared kitchen form the social heart of the building, doubling as flexible spaces for education, outreach and community use. Drawing inspiration from the domestic scale and atmosphere of Maggie’s Centres, Lyndhurst Health Centre prioritises comfort, dignity and warmth, creating a hygienic environment that is welcoming rather than institutional.
